Toucan Eco Electro-Chemically Activated Cleaning Technology Trial Case Study

Implementing Toucan Eco to remove 90% of all harsh chemicals used in distribution centres. This customer is a multi channel distributor that offers over 700,000 industrial and electronics products from over 2,500 partner suppliers. With over 100 years experience, they share inspiration, imagination and innovation. Part of a wider Group, they have operations in 32 countries and ship over 50,000 parcels a day.

  • Toucan uses electrochemical activation and salt to create a multi-purpose cleaner and disinfectant that kills up to 99.9% of germs and bacteria and is scientifically proven to work against E. coli, MRSA, Listeria and Coronavirus.
  • This solution reduces waste, carbon impact, and storage demands while cleaning to the highest standards.
  • Toucan has a host of benefits unachievable by chemical alternatives, such as it being non-hazardous and safe if accidentally consumed, COSHH/MSDS is only required for the salt, provides a constant supply without concern for delivery delays, reduced storage demands and no chemical residue left behind.

Recommendation Information:

  • Versions: Toucan Eco Active 5L Toucan Eco Worktop
  • Start of Use: 2020
  • Kit Amount: Four
  • Locations: Two Distribution Centres

Implementation Process:

  • Assessment and Planning:
    • Determine how much product would be needed to produce per site.
  • Installation:
    • Simple installation with the system plumbed into mains water and electricity. The systems have been placed in COSHH cupboards.
    • They completed the installation themselves. Placed the waste in RS’ recycling stream.
  • Training:
    • TCFM Facilities Manager conducted practical training with all colleagues on activating, testing, and using the solution.
    • He also created a user’s guide wall chart detailing a simple, three step process to activate the water.

Problem and Solution

  • TCFM used many chemicals on their sites. We approached this customer with the idea of implementing Toucan, intending to remove up to 90% of all harsh chemicals used.
  • The greatest reduction we wanted to achieve was the removal of the Selden sanitising spray.
  • Toucan has replaced all harsh chemicals on all this customer’s sites besides limescale remover and floor cleaner.

Challenge and Resolution

  • Salt Residue
    • Due to the salt content within the Toucan solution, it can leave salt residue marks on glass.
    • Colleagues ensure they wipe over all surfaces once dry to remove these marks.

Outcome/Evidence

  • The customer conducted ATP testing to see how Toucan performed against the Selden sanitiser.
  • Selden spray took three attempts for the ATP to be low enough to be considered a pass, while Toucan, in comparable testing, passed the ATP test on the first attempt.

Highlight Achievements

    • RLY 730 before RLU 36 after first clean with Toucan.

Impacts

  • Salt Residue
    • TCFM has saved this customer over £15,000 over the four years Toucan has been in. Salt is the only addition to the water, and one five kilogram bag lasts approximately a year across all four Toucan systems.
  • Waste
    • Toucan creates zero waste. The solution is tested every day to ensure it is at the correct level, if it is not, it is energised and not wasted.
  • Environmental Impact * Saved approximately 306kg of plastic in the past four years.
    • That is the weight of two green sea turtles in plastic.
  • Electric Consumption * The system uses 15 minutes of electricity per day to activate the water, the system is then turned off at the wall.
  • Zero breakdowns or repairs have been required in the four years the system has been in.
